How many times have you met someone, sparked conversation that’s going well and then they excitedly ask you, “What’s your sign?!”
Hundreds, right? A person’s zodiac sign has become a normal part of an identifier for many people. When you introduce yourself people expect you to share your name, age, career, hometown, and then your zodiac sign.
I don’t know if you believe in astrology or not, but I hate when that question comes up. It used to leave me in an awkward position having to decide between going with the flow and telling them “my sign” or killing the flow of the conversation by creating an awkward moment telling them “I don’t believe in astrology or horoscopes.”
You may be asking yourself, why don’t you want to just say what your sign is? Well, because I don’t want to identify with anything that God forbids us from indulging in.
On this journey to answering the call of God by developing your light, the enemy will bring a lot of imitators of light to distract you from experiencing the true light of Jesus. One of those imitators include horoscope readings through astrology.
Astrology is very popular in our culture and used by both Christians and non-Christians. A lot of people love them because they want a way to feel connected to something bigger than they are and gain some insight about who they are and their future. People use these signs that are predicted by the stars to help them make good decisions when they are lost. Although most people go to astrology based out of good intentions, it was never created to truly help people, but instead it was inspired by Satan to slowly lead people away from Jesus.
The Bible warns us against engaging in astrology, fortune-tellers, magicians, sorcery, or any type of witchcraft. God forbids His children from indulging in anything of the sorts.
When all the magicians, enchanters, astrologers, and fortune-tellers came in, I told them the dream, but they could not tell me what it meant. [Daniel 4:7]
All the advice you receive has made you tired. Where are all your astrologers, those stargazers who make predictions each month? Let them stand up and save you from what the future holds. But they are like straw burning in a fire; they cannot save themselves from the flame. You will get no help from them at all; their hearth is no place to sit for warmth. [Isaiah 47:13-14]
Daniel replied, “There are no wise men, enchanters, magicians, or fortune-tellers who can reveal the king’s secret. But there is a God in heaven who reveals secrets, and he has shown King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in the future. Now I will tell you your dream and the visions you saw as you lay on your bed. [Daniel 2:27-28]
“When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, be very careful not to imitate the detestable customs of the nations living there. For example, never sacrifice your son or daughter as a burnt offering. And do not let your people practice fortune-telling, or use sorcery, or interpret omens, or engage in witchcraft, or cast spells, or function as mediums or psychics, or call forth the spirits of the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord. It is because the other nations have done these detestable things that the Lord your God will drive them out ahead of you. [Deuteronomy 18:9-12]
As you can see astrology and anything similar is mentioned all throughout the Bible. Earlier I mentioned how this inspired by Satan to lead people astray from Jesus. How you may ask?
You can always identify the markings of Satan by it imitating God. The idea of horoscopes is seeking a source outside of God to tell us who we are, our characteristics and what will happen in the future.
Have you ever thought about what source of power is being used to answer those questions if it’s not God himself? The stars or universe have no power to tell us anything, they are not God. They were created by God. So why would we look to the creation, instead of the creator Himself to get the answers that we desire?
That is a part of the enemies plan, to get you to seek others things, powers and forces to tell you who you are instead of the one who created you. Satan hates God and everything He created. Satan’s mission is to steal, kill and destroy people because we mean the most to God. He wants our lives to be in chaos and doesn't want us to have faith in Jesus, so he brings about these ideas that mimics God so people think it’s the light, but in fact it’s false light and God is nowhere in it.
But I am not surprised! Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no wonder that his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. In the end they will get the punishment their wicked deeds deserve. [2 Corinthians 11:14-15]
Who are Satans servants that also disguise themselves? Astrologers, fortune-tellers, witches, magicians, etc. The people who originated these things were inspired by Satan and have deceived many people that this light, but it’s not.
Like I mentioned earlier, Satan uses horoscopes as a source outside of God to tell us who we are, our characteristics and what will happen in the future.
Horoscopes tell us who we are
Each zodiac name has a meaning, and every time we say “I am a … (zodiac sign)”, we are taking on that zodiac name’s meaning as an identity as well as declaring it as who we are. For example, the name Capricorn means, the goat. One might look at that as harmless, but there’s a deeper meaning.
“But when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit upon his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered in his presence, and he will separate the people as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will place the sheep at his right hand and the goats at his left…“Then the King will turn to those on the left and say, ‘Away with you, you cursed ones, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his demons. [Matthew 25: 31-33, 41]
I’m not saying you’re going to hell because you call yourself a Capricorn. What I am saying is that we cannot continue to call ourselves something that is cursed. The bible says that life and death is in the power of our tongue, therefore every time we call ourselves something that is contrary to who God says we are, you are agreeing with Satan and slowly making that a reality.
Horoscopes tells us our characteristics
As you may already know each zodiac sign come with a list of characteristics that is meant to describe our personality and character traits. Whether what the horoscope says accurately describes you or not, once again we are coming into agreement about things that God didn’t say. So if you say “I’m a Leo and temperamental” “I’m an Aquarius and very emotional” or “ He’s a Scorpio and is very stubborn.” You are speaking things into existence or if it’s already a fact, you are making a decision to remain that characteristic every time you speak it.
It doesn’t matter what characteristics we seem to naturally have, when we get saved and are born-again we become a new creature in Christ. Therefore we then have to renew our minds with the word of God and declare and become who God says we are.
This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! [2 Corinthians 5:17]
Horoscopes tell us our futures
People love to get insight into their future so that they can know what’s coming and how to handle it. Once again, when we rely on horoscopes to tell us our future, whether it predicts something good or bad, it is agreeing with a power that isn’t from Jesus Christ. When you agree with it, it becomes your reality even if it isn’t the will of God.
The enemy is mimicking the spiritual gift of prophecy that comes from the Holy Spirit or God living in us believers. The goal of prophecy is to reveal the mysteries of God, the will of God, or future events with the goal of leading people to Jesus. That horoscope reading didn’t come from a prophet of God revealing the truths of Jesus. God has a purpose and plan for you, that He wants to reveal to you in the right season, for reasons that will edify you.
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. [Jeremiah 29:11]
The enemy wants to rob you of the future you have in Christ by making you come into agreement with another plan. Even if that other plan seems good, that plan excludes Jesus, and if he successfully gets you to enjoy your life without Jesus, he has accomplished his mission.
The bottom line is that we can’t conform to the things of this world just because it is very popular and even seem harmless. I promise you, the devil is not harmless. He is very strategic to get people to fall away from Christ with things such as astrology. So instead of being deceived by the enemies devices in this world, we have to keep our eyes on Jesus and ask Him for wisdom and discernment.
Moving forward instead of looking to horoscopes to tell us who we are, we have to begin to declare who the Bible says we are, which is a child of God, Holy (which means set apart), servant of Jesus, a royal priesthood and one with Christ.
Instead of looking to horoscopes to tell us our characteristics, we will take on the characteristics of Jesus and declare that our characteristics align with the fruits of spirit; love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Lastly, instead of looking to horoscopes to predict our futures, we must seek the face of God, allow Him to reveal to us the mysteries of our future and search the Bible for promises that we have a right to due to our covenant with Him.
When you are a child of God, the Holy Spirit lives on the inside of you and when you yield to Him, He will lead and guide you in all things so that you don’t have to look to sources outside of God. You don’t need horoscopes to tell you your future when you have the access to the Word of God available for you to declare what your future will be.
So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it. [Isaiah 55:11]
